Must-see places in Nova Scotia. Peggy's Cove

Peggy's Cove

Introduction

Peggy's Cove is a picturesque fishing village located in Nova Scotia, Canada, known for its beautiful cove, lighthouse and rugged coastal scenery. It has a rich history, dating back to the Mi'kmaq people who lived there for thousands of years. In the early 19th century, it was settled by European fishermen. The village is named after the cove and the lighthouse, which was first built in 1868, still stands and serves as a navigational aid for ships entering St. Margaret's Bay. Peggy's Cove is a popular tourist destination, where people come to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, see the lighthouse and the local fishing boats.

Geography, landscape, nature

Peggy's Cove is located on the south shore of Nova Scotia, about a 30 minutes drive from the city of Halifax. This is a very small village, with around ~50 permanent residents. The primary industry of the village is fishing, and you can see the local fisherman bringing in their catch each day. There are also a few gift shops, art galleries, and restaurants in the village, catering to the many tourists who visit (Download a free PDF guide at the end of the article to know more about this area). Peggy's Cove is also an important bird-watching spot, as the cove is home to many migratory birds. The surrounding area is also known for its hiking trails, and visitors can take a walk along the coast to see the beautiful scenery. The surrounding area is also characterized by its natural beauty, with various wildlife and plants. The coast is home to many different species of birds, including seagulls, eiders, and cormorants. The rocky cliffs and ledges are also home to nesting seabirds, such as guillemots and kittiwakes. The area is also known for its hiking trails, which provide great opportunities to explore the landscape and take in stunning views.

Peggy's Cove village houses

Village architecture

The village, which is located along the bay, deserves special attention. It is characterized by the presence of bright facades and fishing equipment that can be seen up close. The pace of life is very slow and measured. Here you can enjoy the beauty of the architecture of a small settlement. Everything is done with high quality down to the smallest detail, the houses are bright and stand out very strongly against the background of the ocean and rocky terrain. Please note that many of the houses are residential, do not try to sneak into a private area and take a photo. It's disrespectful to the people who live there.

Peggy's Cove roads, parking lots

Roads, parking lots

The roads in Peggy's Cove are repaired and clean. You will easily reach any tourist point (of course, except for hiking trails. Only your legs will help you there). There are a lot of parking lots, but I advise you to arrive early since in the first half of the day the flow of tourists is quite large.

Peggy's Cove Sou’Wester restaurant

Food, souvenirs

The best place for breakfast with a great view and buying souvenirs is the Sou’Wester restaurant. There are many seats, friendly staff, a huge assortment of souvenirs and cuisine typical of this region. You have the opportunity to try lobster soup and the famous Canadian breakfast with gravy, bacon and fried eggs. The variety of souvenirs is amazing. You'll find everything from keychains and socks to huge handmade paintings by local artists.
